Julie Spollen

I thought I'd look up the winning artists from the Body of Work art exhibition that Matt just blogged. Julie Spollen, who won third prize, is the only one of the three I have been able to find any images for. The mouth piece and nose piece shown here were exhibited at the Royal College of Art in 1997 as part of the graduate show that year. Julie had previously studied design in Dublin before training at the RCA. The pieces she entered in the Body of Work exhibition are entitled Exhaust, Urban Mouth Filters and Nose Filters, suggesting some sort of environmental association perhaps - something to protect us from pollution maybe. Yet, in this 1997 image there is nobody left to protect. There is only a whiff of death, an eerie, breathless silence.
